Campbell analyzes the motivations behind the jokes that missionaries play on each other while serving two-year proselytizing missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She suggests that missionaries play pranks in order to increase solidarity, to exert social control and to emphasize the importance of certain norms. She also suggests that pranks act as release valves, allowing missionaries to reduces the stresses of a mission lifestyle.
